2021 Pseudohyphae

Pseudohyphae, 2021 was created specially for En-tropy a special collective exhibition during GIBCA Extended 2021.

Pseudohyphae is a continuation of Hyphae, which she directed in 2020. While Hyphae happens in the forest and the artist performs a walking meditation and installation, Pseudohyphae happens in a rooftop. It’s the rooftop of a 1450’s sugar mill (Sockerbrucket in Gothenburg).

The artist is meditating simultaneously in two distinct spaces: on a TV screen and live. While the film Hyphae is streaming, a parallel scene takes place across the room: an unmasked live standing 20-minute meditation.

The artist used the linen thread she had used in her forest installation Hyphae in 2020. She visualized an imaginary thread pulling the head to the heavens while performing her standing meditation (Zhàn zhuāng 站樁/站桩), a practice she learned through years of studying tai chi. The intention is to keep a still position for the duration of the meditation.

The work is a metaphor for our search for balance and grounding. Her antidote for dislocation, experienced when we are born in one place but live in another.

In this new collaboration, Artist Bev Hayes captured again Cárdenas, in her creative process and natural environment.
