About gabyberglundcardenas

International artist based in Sweden Multidisciplinary Arts/Printmaking

My work at Koehnline Museum of Art, Illinois

Yesterday opened FEMINISM ACROSS THE GENERATIONS, running through Oct.23rd with an enthusiastic crowd present at the party. I was selected to participate in this year’s collaboration between Women’s and Gender Studies and the Koehnline Museum featuring work that explores ways feminists can reach across divisions of time and place to learn from one another in order to grow the movement. What can feminists of today learn from the triumphs, sacrifices, and mistakes of our foremothers? What are fresh perspectives and methods that a new generation of feminist activists can bring to the table? This provocative exhibit examines—and celebrates—feminism’s past, present, and future.

First exhibition in Sweden opening now!

I feel truly humbled and honored to exhibit in Gothenburg for the first time. After leaving Sweden 6 years ago for S. Korea, the feeling is almost surreal as it’s been a long journey working hard to achieve balance but incredibly enriching. Writing from Busan, I’m sad I can’t be there but I feel grateful to have great friends in my place. Photos will follow in a few days.

Creating from Sweden

Nature offers the best setting for an artist. When we asked our son what was the best part of his summer vacation in the countryside of Sweden he said: “Playing music”. I feel the same way. I made a few new woodcuts and although they’re untitled, they were inspired in the poem of Nobel laureate Wislawa Szymborska’s “Life while you wait”.  Maybe a new series… Not sure but right now looking forward to a group exhibit I’ll be part of in Gothenburg, Sweden starting Aug.15. Details to follow.

Next stop is Enschede, Netherlands with “Voyage, Voyage”

Our travelling exhibit “Voyage, voyage” will be at Tankstation in Enschede, Netherlands this summer July 7-31. The exhibit started in Alkmaar earlier this year and will end in Germany at the end of 2015. Our curator: Jeroen van Paassen’s thoughts around the theme Voyage Voyage – the artist as a modern nomad:

“After the 2nd World War, making travel far become commonplace, even for artists. They travel to the end of the world to be inspired by distant horizons, follow artist-in -residence programs in several countries or emigrate to new home countries. How are all these contacts with other cultures reflected in contemporary art ? Can one speak of multicultural art?”

Recently in Skopje, Macedonia

Recently I was invited by a wonderful Curator: Jeroen van Paassen to participate with a group of Dutch Artists in Paratissima Skopje 2015 an international contemporary art fair that started in 2004 in Turin, Italy with the aim of hosting and promoting artists and creative workers in a context detached from the institutional and elite art scene and giving emerging talents an opportunity to surface and grow.

This year, the second edition of Paratissima Skopje was held from 12–14 June in the Youth Cultural Center, Skopje despite de fragility of the country’s political situation. Wonderful photos can be seen on their FB page or click here for my own photos.
